Danish Sculptors Society (DBS) was founded on May 6, 1905 and could celebrate 110 years anniversary in 2015 as one of the oldest associations of practising sculptors in the world.
The founders were some of the most prominent sculptors of that time, among others Carl Mortensen, Einar Utzon Frank, Johannes Bjerg and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen.
The sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen (born Brodersen) was a member of the society from the start in 1905. She was married to the composer Carl Nielsen.
The Society admit professional sculptors and works for the recognition and participation of its members in cultural life in Denmark and abroad. At present we has 80 members. Our members are working within a comprehensive variety of artistic fields: naturalistic, abstract, concrete, conceptual, experimenting as well as installations.
Most sculptors choose to express themselves through one or more materials, such as stone, metal, plaster, wood, clay, glass or synthetic materials in order to achieve the technical knowhow and insight that most strongly communicate their artistic visions.
We cooperate with organisations and exhibition rooms and galleries in Denmark and abroad in order to give our members the best possibility for presenting their art to the public.
In 2014 the Sculpture Biennial opened in the beautiful Augustenborg Castle and Park. Under the title “Sculpture Focus Augustiana 2014” 55 sculptors exhibited 150 sculptures. It was a strong and comprehensive statement that became a great success with thousands of visitors from Denmark and abroad.
In 2016 “Sculpture Biennial Hollufgård 2016” took place in the park at the manor Hollufgård in Odense. 33 sculptors participated with 62 works. Many guests visited the exhibition in the the magnificent park, a really unique and intimate exhibition space.
Later in the same year, 16 of our members were selected to realise the exhibition SES, Sculptural Experimentarium in Silkeborg at the Art Center Silkeborg Bath. A space specific exhibition in the museum park that received great attention and attracted a large public from the whole country.
Now in 2017 we have “Sculpture Ølgod”. An international Sculpture Biennial that we arrange together with enthusiastic local souls from Ølgod. This will be the 8th time. An exhibition where over 100 works will be shown indoors as well as in the urban space for a period of three months.
In 2018 the annual Sculpture Biennial will be a comprehensive outdoors and indoors exhibition at Dronninglund Art Center in the North of Jutland.
Apart from the various exhibitions, the members of Danish Sculptors Society continuously present their sculptures in permanent outdoor Sculpture Showrooms – at Zealand in Albertslund near Copenhagen and in Jutland the town of Give. Both places the public can enjoy more than 50 sculptures in the public room – many of them for sale.
